Ithaca Viking Sewing Gallery : Machines
Refer to the manual. Each manual has a trouble-shooting section in it.- Clean the
machine. You should vacuum your machine out
after each project. We have a fabulous attachment at the store that works great
for vaccuuming out your machine! Remove the bobbin case and get
into the hidden areas that build up fabric dust and dirt.
Never blow into the machine.
- Change the needle. Replace your needle often. Needles become dull and can get burrs on them, which can raise havoc with your thread and fabric. Needle size and type are specific to your fabric and thread choices. We suggest using Schmetz or Xlassic Universals (most commonly 80/12 or 90/14) in your Viking or White machines. Remember the flat part of the needle goes to the back!
- Rethread the top thread. Even if it appears to be threaded properly, remove all thread from the machine and begin again. Be sure to follow your manual to assure the thread path is correct.
- Check the bobbin. Make sure that you're using the correct bobbin for your machine. Make sure the thread is wound tightly and evenly on the bobbin. Re-insert it, making sure there is tension on the thread.
- Replace and rewind the bobbin. If your machine still isn't working properly, get a new bobbin out. Plastic bobbins can warp.
- Check the tension settings. For the majority of stitches, upper thread tension should be at 5. Pressure on the presser foot should be in the middle or at 4 or N, depending on your machine.
- Don't use old or cheap thread. It breaks easily and is made up of shorter fibers (more lint build-up) and more glue.
- Walk away. If you've done everything above and it still isn't working, sometimes just taking a short break from it before trying again can actually help.
- Call us at (607) 266-0751 or bring in your machine. Let us take a look. If we aren't able to help, we can send it out to service and let a certified technician work on your machine.
